Virtual learning might be keeping children and their families safer during a public health crisis; However, it has made it exponentially harder for students to stay motivated and actually achieve cognition. At middle and upper grade levels, online classes tend to be lecture-heavy, repetitive, and devoid of student conversation. It is reported that grades have dropped from A’s and B’s to D’s and F’s.
Students are struggling due to lack of structure. They stay up late, oversleep in the morning, and skip classes. Further, many are not engaged during the online lessons and are finding ways to cheat. This is especially evident once testing comes around. These behaviors go without consequence as enforcement is an issue. “There is a lot less control on the part of the teacher right now, and that can make us uncomfortable. Especially when we are being held accountable as teachers.” According to a report at Edweek website.
Many students are having trouble with English and Math. In-person, on campus, is the proven method for students to get the one-on-one help and interactions they need to improve their grades. LaTricea Adams, the founder of Black Millennials 4 Flint in Michigan, figures local children are at least a year behind in their studies, based on what she has heard from families and educators. “Some kids really need one-on-one sessions, but that’s almost impossible for them to get in a virtual setting,” Adams said. The “Covid-Slide” is real and is affecting most of the student population all over the country. Students who have returned to school physically are showing improvements, while the others continue to slide.
When discussing physical activity such as school sports programs and fitness activities, research has shown that activity alone helps with students’ learning skills and memory. During the pandemic time, students have been sedentary and are not getting this physicality of which their developing bodies crave!
According to a study at the CDC, students who are physically active tend to have better grades, school attendance, cognitive performance (e.g., memory), and classroom behaviors (e.g., on-task behavior). Higher physical activity and physical fitness levels are associated with improved cognitive performance (e.g., concentration, memory) among students.
