With virtual classrooms and no in-person schooling on campus, students are struggling due to lack of structure. They stay up late, oversleep in the morning, and skip classes. Further, many are not engaged during the online lessons and are finding ways to cheat. This is especially evident once testing comes around. These behaviors go without consequence as enforcement is an issue. “There is a lot less control on the part of the teacher right now, and that can make us uncomfortable. Especially when we are being held accountable as teachers.”
Starting your child off in a private school instead of a daycare has so many advantages. A private school has multiple grade levels and is an educational facility. In a school, there are state certified teachers and principals who oversee and implement state certified learning programs. Private schools themselves have accreditation from state and national school associations, which means, a more academic approach is present at a private school than at a daycare center.
At Beacon Hill School-Hollywood, we have decided to slowly and safely physically re-open. We have added personal hygiene/Covid safety measures into our curriculum at all age levels. Teachers and janitorial staff perform frequent, scheduled cleaning procedures for facilities to ensure surfaces are disinfected, while school-wide implementation of physical distancing in classrooms and throughout the campus is also in effect.
Private schools, such as Beacon Hill, in most cases have smaller classroom sizes and were able to move more swiftly to 100% online learning, as well as, providing the needed attention to the students in each class. Online learning seems to be the new normal with a blend of in person on campus and online learning likely to be part of the daily classroom teaching efforts in the near future.
The staff at Beacon Hill School Hollywood is encouraged to be creative and works with students on how to listen and practice listening to others, taking turns in a conversation, suggesting an idea, providing praise to others, saying please and thank-you, and apologizing when necessary.
